  • Why St. John, USVI, Is a Destination That Lingers Long After You Leave

Some destinations leave a lasting impression, one that stays with you long after the trip has ended. St. John is one of those places for me. What began as a honeymoon destination has unfolded into a place we have returned to through different seasons of life, each visit shaped by thoughtful planning and an appreciation for how effortlessly the island allows you to slow down. Much of St. John is protected national parkland, which gives the island a sense of quiet luxury. It feels untouched, calm, and intentionally preserved. Days here are not dictated by packed itineraries, but by the rhythm of the sun, the sea, and the freedom that comes from being in a place that invites you to simply be present. Arriving on the Island Travel to St. John begins in St. Thomas, followed by a short ferry ride that signals an immediate shift in pace. The crossing is brief, but it is often the moment when everything slows down. As the ferry pulls into Cruz Bay, the water turns impossibly blue, and the island gradually reveals itself. Planning this arrival carefully makes all the difference. Arranging transportation in advance and timing the ferry connection removes unnecessary stress and allows the vacation to begin the moment you land. Once on the island, renting a four-wheel-drive vehicle opens up St. John fully, making it easier to navigate steep roads and reach beaches and viewpoints tucked into the hills. For ferry schedules and crossings, the official St. John–St. Thomas ferry service is the most reliable place to start planning. Where We Stay Over the years, I have experienced St. John through a range of accommodations, from resort-style stays near Cruz Bay to private villas perched above the water. Each option offers a different perspective of the island, but villas consistently stand out for the sense of ease and retreat they provide. Waking up to ocean views, spending afternoons by a private pool, and ending the day watching the sun set over the water creates a natural rhythm that defines the experience. These spaces allow St. John to be enjoyed slowly, with room to gather, relax, and truly settle into island life. Choosing the right accommodations is one of the most important planning decisions for a St. John trip. Location, access to beaches, and the overall flow of your days are all shaped by where you stay. Days Shaped by the Sea Life on St. John revolves around the water. One of the simplest planning choices that consistently enhances the trip is bringing your own snorkel gear. Many of the island’s beaches offer incredible snorkeling directly from shore, where coral and marine life appear just beyond the sand. Time spent on the water is essential. A catamaran or private boat day remains one of the most memorable ways to experience the island, offering access to quieter coves and a completely different perspective of the coastline. These days tend to become the moments people talk about long after returning home. Trunk Bay and Cinnamon Bay are among the most iconic beaches on the island, each offering crystal-clear water and a sense of calm that defines St. John’s appeal. Exploring Beyond the Beach While the beaches are undeniably stunning, St. John rewards those who explore further. Hiking trails wind through dense greenery and open up to sweeping viewpoints where land meets sea. Trails like Ram Head offer dramatic scenery, while Reef Bay reveals a quieter, more layered side of the island. These moments add depth to the trip and create balance, especially when paired with long beach days and time on the water. Evenings on St. John are best kept relaxed. Dining feels refined but unpretentious, with sunset cocktails and unhurried meals setting the tone. Whether overlooking Cruz Bay or tucked into a quieter corner of the island, nights here feel easy and natural. Why Planning Matters St. John may feel remote, but thoughtful planning makes the island feel effortless. Grocery provisioning before arrival, understanding island driving, and selecting accommodations that match your travel style all contribute to a smoother experience. The beauty of St. John is that it adapts. It works beautifully for couples, families, and small groups alike, offering flexibility without sacrificing comfort or atmosphere. Final Reflections St. John is not a destination that requires a packed itinerary. Its magic lies in simplicity and intention. Well-planned days leave room for spontaneity, connection, and rest. Each visit has reinforced my deep appreciation for thoughtful travel planning. When logistics fade into the background, the experience comes into focus. St. John offers a rare balance of natural beauty and quiet luxury, making it a place that lingers long after you leave and invites you to return when the timing feels right.

  • Seattle to San Francisco: 5-Day Pacific Coast Highway Road Trip Itinerary

Day 1: Seattle → Port Angeles Day 1: Seattle to Port Angeles – Markets, Ferries & Mountain Views We kicked off our Pacific Coast Highway adventure with an early morning flight from Greensboro, NC, to Seattle. After landing, we picked up our rental car from Avis. Pro tip: We booked through the American Airlines portal to earn points — the price was the same as booking directly with Avis, but we earned extra travel rewards. Pike Place Market (Seattle Stop #1) Our first stop was the famous Pike Place Market . Nothing says “Seattle” like watching the fishmongers toss salmon through the air. We grabbed lunch, browsed local souvenirs, and soaked up the lively atmosphere before heading out of the city. 📌 Travel Tip:  If you love markets, you’ll find plenty of unique foods and crafts here. Bring a reusable tote bag (like this foldable travel one, HERE ) for easy shopping. Scenic Ferry Ride Next, we drove to the Fauntleroy Ferry Terminal  to cross over to Southpoint. Riding the ferry was an adventure on its own — sea views, salty air, and the excitement of leaving the city behind. From the ferry, we made our way toward Hama Hama Oyster Saloon. Side note: always double-check opening days before heading out! Hama Hama is only open on weekends, so we couldn’t stop this time. Hidden Gem: Mount Walker Lookout On the drive, we stumbled on Mount Walker Lookout  — and it was worth the detour. At 2,805 feet, the view stretched across lush forests and snow-dusted peaks. It’s the kind of stop you only find when you slow down and explore. Overnight in Port Angeles We booked our stay at the Red Lion Hotel  in Port Angeles ( booked through AA for points — but you can also check deals on Expedia . Dinner was casual and delicious: pizza on the wharf, followed by a late-night stop at In-N-Out Burger  — because when in the West, you have to. Day 2: Olympic National Park – Waterfalls, Lakes & Giant Trees We fueled up with breakfast at Chestnut Cottage Restaurant  in Port Angeles — the plates were massive, so definitely come hungry! Madison Falls & Lake Crescent First up: Madison Falls Trailhead , a quick walk to a beautiful waterfall surrounded by mossy forest. From there, we followed the road along Lake Crescent , with its sparkling blue water framed by towering evergreens. 📌 Travel Tip:  The backpack water bottle is a game-changer.[ Amazon link ] — you dont want to stop often. Marymere Falls & Rainforest Hikes Just off Lake Crescent, we hiked to Marymere Falls . The old-growth forest along the way was jaw-dropping — huge trees, ferns, and even a deer perched on a fallen log. Hurricane Ridge & Hurricane Hill (Almost) We drove up to Hurricane Ridge  for sweeping mountain views. The Hurricane Hill trail  is a 3-mile hike at high elevation, and with recent cougar sightings, we decided to stick to the overlook instead. Still, the views were worth it. Elwha Valley & Giant Trees Our final park stop was the Elwha Valley , home to waterfalls and massive trees. Walking here felt like stepping into a prehistoric forest. 📌 Travel Tip:  If you’re visiting multiple parks, buy the America the Beautiful Pass   — it pays for itself quickly. Lunch & Evening in Forks We stopped at The Corner Caboose  for lunch (hearty and delicious), then continued to Forks  for the night. Dinner was at a little Mexican restaurant ( Taqueria San Diatas ). It wasn’t fancy, but it was authentic and comforting after a big day outdoors. Day 3: Forks → Cannon Beach – Quirky Stops & Coastal Charm Morning coffee at Local Mocha  fueled us for the drive south. World’s Largest Attractions Along the way, we stopped at some quirky “world’s largest” sights — including the World’s Largest Sitka Spruce  and the World’s Largest Oyster . These roadside oddities added fun breaks to the drive. Goose Point Shellfish Farm Since Hama Hama  was closed, we detoured to Goose Point Shellfish Farm . My youngest tried raw oysters for the first time (brave!) while I tested smoked ones — not my vibe, but still a fun stop. Astoria Brewery Crossing into Oregon, we paused at Astoria Brewery  for drinks and snacks, then continued toward Cannon Beach. Cannon Beach & Tolovana Beach State Park We checked into the Inn at Cannon Beach and grabbed dinner next door before heading to the beach. Watching the sunset at Cannon Beach  was magical — and later, we stargazed on the sand. My son even captured a stunning star-lapse photo. Day 4: Cannon Beach → Coos Bay – Oregon Coast Icons Silver Point Overlook Just south of Cannon Beach, we stopped at Silver Point Overlook  for postcard-worthy views. Tillamook Creamery Next up: the Tillamook Creamery . From cheese tasting to ice cream, this was a family-friendly favorite. Seal Rock & Thor’s Well Driving south, we explored Seal Rock  and then the dramatic Thor’s Well , where seawater rushes into a natural sinkhole with the tide. 📌 Travel Tip:  Visit Thor’s Well at high tide for drama, but stay back — it can be dangerous. Coos Bay Stay We ended the day with sushi at Tokyo Bistro  and checked into a Cube House Airbnb  (unique and fun lodging option). Day 5: Coos Bay → San Francisco – Scenic Drive South This was our longest drive day, but we squeezed in a few great stops. Face Rock State Scenic Viewpoint A beautiful place to stretch our legs and enjoy sweeping coastal views. Trinidad Bay Eatery & Gallery Lunch at Trinidad Bay Eatery  was a highlight — their crab fries are famous for a reason. Classic Road Trip Eats We couldn’t resist one more In-N-Out Burger  before reaching San Francisco. San Francisco Arrival We checked into the Marriott San Francisco for a comfortable last night. Travel Tips & Road Trip Essentials These items made our journey stress-free: Packing Cubes  → no messy luggage [ Amazon link ] Cooler Backpack  → snacks stayed fresh [ Amazon link] Portable Charger  → phones always powered [ Amazon link ] Daypack Backpack  → perfect for waterfall hikes [ Amazon link] America the Beautiful Pass  → saved money at Olympic NP 👉 Don’t forget to grab my Free Road Trip Packing Checklist  [ link] before you hit the road. • 5 luxe Essentials I'm Packing for Our West Coast Adventure

From misty orca-watching mornings in Washington to sun-soaked afternoons exploring the cliffs near Big Sur, the West Coast is calling—and this time, I’m packing smarter, lighter, and more curated than ever. These are the pieces that made it into my carry-on (and checked bag)—not just because they look good, but because they work . Thoughtful travel is all about ease, comfort, and a touch of luxury, no matter the destination. 🧳 1. SwissGear 7366 Hardside Expandable Spinner Luggage 💼 Shop it on Amazon → I was instantly drawn to the Clearly Aqua color—it’s bold but calming, easy to spot on the carousel, and surprisingly elegant. The 23-inch checked size gives me just enough space for layers, hiking clothes, and my favorite cozy wrap for chilly coastlines. Spinner wheels = game changer for those long airport walks. Tip: Pack your heaviest layers at the bottom and balance your weight—it glides better that way. 🎒 2. LOVEVOOK 40L Travel Backpack for Women (with Packing Cubes!) 🎒 Shop it on Amazon → TSA-approved and cute? Yes, please. This grey-pink backpack fits everything from my laptop to snacks, and it opens flat for security checks. Bonus: it comes with two packing cubes, which helped me keep outfits and toiletries completely organized. I used this as my personal item on the plane and it slid right under the seat—no stress, no shuffle. 🧊 3. STANLEY IceFlow Stainless Steel Tumbler with Straw 🥤 Shop it on Amazon → Between hikes, long drives, and breezy beach walks, staying hydrated is a must. This tumbler kept my drinks ice-cold all day (yes, even in the heat of southern California). And the straw lid is spill-resistant, which is ideal when you’re tossing it into your daypack. Aesthetic? Definitely. Functional? Absolutely. Worth the hype. 🏞️ 4. G4Free Lightweight Foldable Hiking Daypack (10L/15L) 🟢 Shop it on Amazon → This was my go-to for hikes in Zion and Olympic National Parks. It’s compact enough to fit in my suitcase but unfolded into a sturdy, water-resistant backpack that held snacks, a camera, and my Stanley tumbler. Bonus: it weighs almost nothing. When space is tight, packable gear like this is everything. 👒 5. UV Protection Sun Hat (With Ponytail Slot!) 🧢 Shop it on Amazon → The West Coast sun can sneak up on you, especially during long walks or coastal hikes. This wide-brimmed hat offered shade and  style. The ponytail slot was a win—no more awkward hat hair or sweaty updos. Fashion meets function—and folds down nicely into your daypack. 🎧 Bonus Luxury: Bose QuietComfort Ultra Bluetooth Earbuds 🎧 Shop it on Amazon → The sound quality is unreal. I used these on flights, in bustling cafés, and even while journaling from our rental cabin. They blocked out airplane noise and helped me stay centered while traveling. For moments of peace on the go—these are non-negotiable. 🧳 Wrap-Up: This trip taught me that the key to great travel isn’t overpacking—it’s choosing intentionally . These pieces helped me stay organized, stylish, and fully present during every part of our journey. If you’re planning a trip of your own, I hope this list helps you wander a little lighter and a lot more confidently.
